Whether you’re making candle holders, trays, jewellery or small sculptures, the material you choose will shape both the look and the feel of your finished piece. Among UK makers and hobbyists, three materials stand out: Jesmonite, plaster, and resin. Each has its own strengths, challenges and ideal uses. Here’s a guide to help you decide which one suits your next creative project.

Jesmonite – the modern all-rounder

Jesmonite has become a favourite among British crafters in recent years, and it’s easy to see why. It’s a composite of mineral powder and a water-based acrylic resin, making it both versatile and more eco-friendly than many alternatives.

It’s easy to mix, sets quickly, and produces a smooth, matte finish that resembles stone or ceramic. You can tint it with pigments, pour it into moulds, and sand it once cured. It’s perfect for home décor pieces such as coasters, trays and planters.

Pros:

  • Water-based and low-odour – ideal for indoor use
  • Fast setting time (around 20–30 minutes)
  • Can be tinted in a wide range of colours for a modern, stone-like look

Cons:

  • Needs sealing for outdoor use
  • More expensive than plaster
  • Requires accurate mixing for best results

Jesmonite is a great choice if you want a professional finish without dealing with strong fumes or complex chemicals.

Plaster – the classic for quick and simple projects

Plaster is one of the oldest and most accessible casting materials. It’s inexpensive, widely available in UK craft shops, and only needs water to activate. It’s perfect for beginners who want to experiment with moulds, textures and shapes.

It sets quickly and can be painted or sealed once dry. However, plaster is porous and fragile, so it’s best suited for decorative items rather than functional ones.

Pros:

  • Affordable and easy to use
  • Quick setting time and easy to paint
  • Great for testing ideas and small decorative pieces

Cons:

  • Brittle and prone to chipping
  • Not waterproof
  • Limited durability without sealing

Plaster is ideal if you’re experimenting or making small ornaments where longevity isn’t the main concern.

Resin – the clear and durable option

Resin (usually epoxy resin) is known for its glass-like clarity and strength. It’s often used for jewellery, tabletops, and art pieces where a glossy, transparent finish is desired. You can add pigments, glitter, dried flowers or other inclusions to create unique effects. Once cured, resin is tough, waterproof and long-lasting.

However, it’s more technical to work with. Resin comes in two parts that must be mixed precisely, and it releases fumes while curing, so good ventilation is essential.

Pros:

  • Extremely durable and waterproof
  • Produces a glossy, professional finish
  • Suitable for both small and large projects

Cons:

  • Requires precise measuring and good ventilation
  • Longer curing time (often 24 hours or more)
  • More expensive and technical to handle

Resin is the right choice if you want a high-end, long-lasting result and don’t mind a more involved process.

Which material suits your project?

Your choice depends on what you’re making, how much time you have, and the finish you want.

| Project | Best choice | Why | |----------|--------------|------| | Candle holders and trays | Jesmonite | Smooth, stone-like finish and easy to work with | | Small figures and ornaments | Plaster | Cheap, quick and perfect for experimenting | | Jewellery and art with embedded elements | Resin | Clear, durable and professional-looking | | Outdoor decorations | Jesmonite (sealed) or resin | Both can withstand moisture if properly finished |

Getting started

Whatever you choose, a few simple steps will make your crafting process smoother:

  • Prepare your workspace – cover your table, wear gloves, and keep tools ready.
  • Measure accurately – especially important for Jesmonite and resin.
  • Work in small batches – these materials can set quickly.
  • Experiment with colour and texture – try marbling, pigments or inclusions for unique effects.
  • Seal or finish your piece – a clear wax, varnish or sealant can protect and enhance the surface.

Creativity starts with understanding your materials

Choosing the right material isn’t just about practicality – it’s about expression. Jesmonite offers a modern, minimalist look; plaster gives a soft, classic feel; and resin delivers a sleek, glossy finish. Once you understand their differences, you can plan your projects more confidently and enjoy the creative process even more.
