The wedding cake is one of the highlights of the celebration – a symbol of love and a sweet treat to round off the day. It should look stunning, taste delicious, and be big enough for everyone, but not so large that half of it ends up uneaten. Finding the right size is about more than just counting guests – it also depends on how and when the cake is served, and what role it plays in your reception. Here’s a guide to help you choose the perfect size for your wedding cake.

How many guests – and how will the cake be served?

Start by considering your guest list. A common rule of thumb is that one slice of wedding cake equals about 100–120 grams per person. But the exact amount depends on how the cake fits into your day:

  • Is the cake served as dessert? Plan for one full slice per guest. People tend to eat more when the cake is part of the meal.
  • Is it served later in the evening? If it comes after the evening buffet or as a late-night treat, you can usually allow for about three-quarters of a slice per person.
  • Are there other desserts? If the cake is just one of several sweet options, half a slice per guest is often enough.

It’s always better to have a little too much than too little – but remember that wedding cake rarely tastes as good the next day, so avoid over-ordering.

Tiers and proportions

Wedding cakes come in all shapes and sizes – from simple two-tier designs to grand five- or six-tier showstoppers. The number of tiers is both an aesthetic and practical choice.

  • Up to 40 guests: A two-tier cake is usually plenty.
  • 40–80 guests: Three tiers look elegant and provide a good amount.
  • 80–120 guests: Four tiers ensure there’s enough for everyone and make a striking centrepiece.
  • Over 120 guests: Consider five tiers or a combination of a display cake and extra “kitchen cake” for serving.

Bakers often work with standard cake sizes, so they can advise you on the right diameters and tier combinations for your guest count.

Should you have a “kitchen cake”?

Many couples choose to supplement their display cake with a kitchen cake – an extra cake kept behind the scenes for serving. This allows you to have a tall, beautiful cake for cutting and photos, without needing every tier to be real cake.

The kitchen cake is usually made with the same flavours and fillings as the main cake, so guests won’t notice any difference. It’s a practical and cost-effective solution, especially for larger weddings.

Flavour and filling affect portion size

A light sponge or mousse cake is often eaten in larger portions than a rich chocolate or fruit cake. If you choose a dense, indulgent cake, you can plan for slightly smaller slices. On the other hand, a fresh, airy cake with fruit and cream can be served in more generous portions.

Discuss the composition of your cake with your baker – they’ll know from experience how much guests typically eat of different types.

Think about how it will be served

The way the cake is served also affects how much you’ll need. If it’s served at the tables, every guest will receive a slice, so plan for the full number. If it’s served as part of a buffet, some guests may take smaller pieces or skip it altogether – in that case, you can usually cater for around 80–90% of your guest count.

Also consider whether the cake will be cut and plated by staff or served as pre-cut portions. This can influence both presentation and portion control.

A few practical tips

  • Order in good time. Most bakers prefer at least one to two months’ notice for wedding cakes.
  • Plan the transport. Large cakes need careful handling – ask if your baker offers delivery and setup.
  • Save the top tier. Some couples like to freeze the top tier for their first anniversary – just make sure it’s well wrapped to stay fresh.

The perfect cake is all about balance

The ideal wedding cake is one that suits your celebration, your taste, and your guests. It’s not just about size, but about the overall experience – the look, the flavour, and the moment you share when cutting it. With a bit of planning and advice from your baker, you can make sure everyone gets a slice of the sweetness – without any going to waste.
